Miss Chubby Paraguay is a beauty pageant contest that ocurre in the capital Asunción,where women between 18 and 25 years run for the Miss Chubby title.
The gist of this program isn’t fashion and beauty. It is the rehabilitation aspect . The contestants, who weigh between 200-260 pounds, see a nutritionist, a psychologist and an image consultant three months before the fashion show component of the pageant. They are taught better eating habits and how to be more comfortable in their skin.
Miss Chubby born with the intention to enhance the beauty of the woman who is in overweight. They intend to break down the barriers of discrimination against women who suffer from obesity and improve the quality of life of the contestants.
Nearly 60% of Paraguay’s population is considered overweight or obese, according to statistics from the health ministry. Despite such a high rate, there is widespread discrimination against overweight people.
I did portraits of the candidates in their rooms at their houses, where they feel confident to show themselves without complexes and prejudices
With unrealistic beauty standards permeating the media, I’ve always think: What is beautiful? Who made the rules?.

Miss Gordita Paraguay es un concurso de belleza que se hace en la capital, Asunción, en el que mujeres entre 18 y 25 años se postulan por el título de Miss Gordita.
El razón de este concurso no es la moda y la belleza. Las concursantes, que pesan entre 200 y 260 libras, ven a un nutricionista, un psicólogo y un asesor de imagen tres meses antes del certamen. Se les enseña mejores hábitos alimenticios y cómo sentirse más cómodas con su cuerpo.
Miss Gordita nace con la intención de realzar la belleza de la mujer que tiene sobrepeso. Pretenden romper las barreras de discriminación contra las mujeres que padecen obesidad y mejorar la calidad de vida de las concursantes.
Casi el 60% de la población de Paraguay se considera con sobrepeso u obesidad, según estadísticas del Ministerio de Salud. A pesar de que es una tasa muy alta, existe una discriminación generalizada contra las personas con sobrepeso.
Hice estos retratos de los candidatas en sus habitaciones, donde se sintieron confiadas para mostrarse sin complejos y prejuicios.
Con los estándares de belleza poco realistas que impregnan los medios, siempre he pensado: ¿Qué es hermoso? ¿Quién hizo las reglas?.
